Zoey: Now was that so hard to say to my face?
Chase: It was easy.
Zoey: Good. I love you too.
"
Zoey and Chase in Trading Places.

The Zoey and Chase relationship (in fandom, known as Choey or Zase) is both the romantic and platonic pairing of the two main characters in Zoey 101, Zoey Brooks and Chase Matthews. The two have been best friends since the first episode, Welcome to PCA. This is the main couple in the series and is also the most popular couple in the show.

Background[]

From the very first episode of Zoey 101, Chase has had a huge crush on Zoey, that never went away throughout the course of the series, no matter if he had a new girlfriend or not. Everyone was aware of Chase's crush on her, except Zoey herself. Despite the crush, Chase and Zoey were best of friends and they agreed throughout the show that if they date someone or compete with each other, it shouldn't effect their friendship.

In Season 1, starting with the first episode, Welcome to PCA, Chase sees Zoey for the first time when he's riding on his bike, and glances over at her, as if he's in love. He runs into a flagpole, and falls over, to which Zoey runs over to check on him. She notices that he has an arm injury and tries to comfort him. Afterward, the two talk and Chase gives her a tour of the entire campus and takes her to her room. At the end of the episode, Zoey tells Chase that she is glad that they're friends. It is clear by this point that Chase has a crush on Zoey. In the next episode, New Roomies, Chase takes advice from Logan and takes advantage of Zoey and her roommates arguing by spending more time with Zoey because of her having more free time. Later, Chase invites Zoey to go see a movie with him on campus. Chase plans to give a rose to Zoey, but because she brought her roommates along with her, Chase gets nervous and gets rid of the rose. In Quinn's Date, after Zoey asks Chase to go on a date with him, Chase, while on his bike, falls down, and says yes, ignoring his situation. Moreover, in Little Beach Party, Zoey, explaining genetics to him, says "if we ever got married brown eyes would be dominant and green eyes would be recessive", Chase comically retorts "are you asking me to marry you?"

In many episodes, Chase is shown to help Zoey out in her predicaments. In Webcam, Chase helps to get back at Logan for spying on the Girls' Dorm Lounge with a hidden webcam. In Defending Dustin, Chase notices that Zoey is being overprotective of Dustin and reasons with her and tries to convince her to let up a bit over Dustin.

Chase often develops slight insecurities whenever Zoey becomes romantically involved with another person. In The Play, Chase writes a play about a lifeguard that saves and kisses an alien from drowning after a spaceship-wreck. Chase is very excited when Zoey lands the role of the alien because Chase is playing the lifeguard, and will, therefore, get to kiss Zoey. However, Logan interferes with Chase's plan when Logan ends up impressing the play manager with his audition, taking the lifeguard role away from Chase. Chase subsequently becomes noticeably jealous that Logan gets to kiss Zoey, and Chase doesn't, and also the fact that Zoey seems to have a crush on Logan. After the play, when Zoey changes the play and ends up not kissing Logan's character, Chase cheers Zoey on from the back of the audience, happy that Zoey didn't fall for someone of the likes of Logan. Additionally, in School Dance, when Zoey chooses Glen Davis instead of Chase, Chase's whole dance is ruined because he was so determined to get to dance with Zoey, and even berates Glenn when he finds out that Glenn cheated to be able to dance with Zoey. At the end of the episode, Chase was just trying to protect Zoey but not letting her dance with bad people. Zoey admits that although what Chase did was wrong (Chase manipulated Zoey into being able to get matched up with him, without her knowing), it was still sweet.

In Season 2, their friendship/relationship grows. in Back to PCA, Chase and Zoey meet up again and state that they are glad to be reunited. In Time Capsule, Zoey and her friends must do a school project that represents them. Zoey and Chase were walking somewhere and talking about the time capsule, when Chase heard that Zoey puts a CD where she talks about her friends, Chase becomes curious. Michael and Chase continues making their song but Chase can't focus after Zoey said that she says something about him. Chase dream was about Zoey's CD and that he already took Zoey's CD on 20 years, but while watching Zoey's CD their future TV was starting to broke and suddenly Chase woke up because of Michael. Chase was really curious and ask Michael to come with him to get Zoey's CD in the time capsule which thinks Michael that it was insane but they did it anyway and successfully got it. Chase was about to watch Zoey's CD but he felt bad because he took the CD without Zoey's permission so he puts the CD back in the time capsule. Zoey was seen riding her Jet X and saw Chase lying on the grass, she walks in and tie Chase's shoelaces and told Chase that he's gonna see it in 10 years instead of 20. In The Election, class presidents have to be voted for and Chase and Zoey nominate each other, both feeling the other would be a good president, although neither of them truly wants to be president. Quinn's crush, Mark Del Figgalo is elected as well. Zoey and Chase make a pact that whatever happens, they promise that the election won't affect their friendship. However, when Logan helps Chase win the election (against his will) by giving away smoothies and school cash for votes for Chase, Zoey gets mad at Chase, thinking he's behind it. Chase attempts to drop out of the race, but Zoey refuses to accept it for the sake of her pride.

Things go from bad to worse when a commercial smearing Chase, and promoting Zoey appears on the PCA TV's. Everyone becomes angry at Zoey, thinking she created it, but it turns out Chase was the one who created it, thinking it would help Zoey win. After realizing how badly it backfired, Chase confesses via teleconference that he himself created the commercial, and drops out of the election. Zoey is appreactive of Chase's kind act and realizes she was wrong to be so hard on him. Zoey later makes amends with Chase, and apologizes to him for not keeping their promise over things that Logan was doing. She also reveals she's dropped out of the election as well. With Chase and Zoey both dropped from the ballot, Mark goes on to win, much to Quinn's delight. In Bad Girl, Zoey sends Chase to persuade Trisha to stop going out with Dustin and go for someone older. She gets the wrong idea and thinks Chase is asking her out and she accepts. To make Trisha stop going out with Chase, he and Zoey pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend. However, Trisha finds this unconvincing, and asks that the 2 kiss each other (much to Chase's delight). Unfortunately, they get interrupted by Dustin attacking Chase (calling him a girlfriend stealer). Trisha finds this manly, and tries to go with Dustin again. Dustin, however, decides that he's too good for her. In Lola Likes Chase, When Lola develops a crush on Chase, Zoey and Chase are forced to address their relationship. With some advice from Michael, Chase decides to say yes to the date. As he forgets about the plans he made with Zoey, Zoey feels jealous and vents to Nicole about Chase and Lola. While on their date, Lola realizes that Chase's heart belong to Zoey and amicably ends their coupling for her friend's sake, subtly encouraging him to chase her.

In the special, Spring Break-Up, as part of Spring Break at PCA, Logan invites all of his friends to his house in Santa Barbara. While packing, Chase steals Michael's cologne; Michael is sure that he's stolen it to attract Zoey, and points out that Spring break will give Chase the perfect time to tell Zoey that he loves her. Chase explains that he's afraid that he'll tell Zoey that he loves her, but she won't love him back, so he doesn't want to risk telling her. Zoey is chosen as the girls team captain, and Chase is chosen as the boys team captain (despite Logan's protests). The team captains are to meet at 10 PM to go over the rules. Once again, Michael finds this as the perfect opportunity for Chase to tell Zoey that he loves her, but Chase still doesn't want to risk it. Chase confronts Michael about the texting, and when Michael says he didn't text him back, Chase realizes the text (stating he loves Zoey) was sent to Zoey.

To Chase's relief, he is able to see that the message is unread, but he must delete the message from Zoey's Tek-Mate before she does read it. However, when he sees her, the two teams are preparing for the first challenge. The mental level, which consists of a scavenger hunt to find numbers to the combination of a safe. Chase manages to sneak Zoey's Tek-Mate from her and delete the message, without her noticing, but before he can return it, the challenge begins, and he cannot return it without her noticing. The girls attempt to win by texting the numbers to Zoey with the Tek-Mates, but she does not receive it. Thus, the boys go on to win the challenge. However, when the girls find out Chase had Zoey's Tek Mate, they accuse him of cheating. Chase proclaims his innocence, but cannot explain his way out of it.. However, the situation puts Zoey and Chase at odds. Back at PCA, as the kids prepare to watch the first ending, Chase and Zoey start talking again. Chase admits the reason he took Zoey's Tek-Mate was because he unintentionally sent a message to her that wasn't meant for her, and had to delete it. Zoey accepts it, but is curious to know what it was. Later on Chase texts her the message that he loves her, but Zoey's Tek-Mate has been left near the fountain, and then vibrates its way into the water and is destroyed, leaving the message never to be read.

In Season 3, starting with the first episode, Surprise, Chase tells Zoey he wants to talk with her privately. Lola and Quinn say that Chase wants to tell her that he is in love with her, but Zoey doesn't believe them. To prove it, she goes to Chase's room to speak to him, but walks in on him kissing his new girlfriend Rebecca. In the next episode, Chase's Girlfriend, Chase's girlfriend, Rebecca, seems really sweet until she demands Zoey to stay away from Chase. After Chase learns about this, he must make a decision: dump Rebecca or stop being friends with Zoey. He dumps her for Zoey's sake and both are happy about it. In Zoey's Tutor, after Logan secretly tutors Zoey in Chemistry, all of her friends become suspicious, especially Chase. Chase holds a conference with Michael, Lola, and Quinn to brainstorm what Logan and Zoey might be doing. Everyone but Chase think that the two are secretly dating. Chase refuses to believe since he still likes Zoey. He tries to find out why, so Logan lies and says that Zoey is dating him, which Chase will not believe and asks him to prove it. Logan makes Chase hide in a bush nearby while Zoey and Logan have a conversation. Logan convinces Chase that Zoey and him are dating, and Chase storms off. Later, Chase apologizes, and Zoey learns about Logan's lie. She tells Chase, Michael, Lola, and Quinn what her and Logan had really been doing, and they decide to get payback. The rat Quinn had been trying to capture the entire episode is placed in Logan's pants by Chase, Michael, and Zoey at night. In Chase's Grandma, Chase's birthday is coming up, but he is too busy writing a 5000-word paper to care. When Zoey hears that Chase and his grandmother share the same birthday and that Chase was close with his grandma when he was young, she decides to give him the perfect gift by bringing his grandmother to PCA. However, his grandmother gets the flu and is unable to come to PCA. Chase doesn't mind, as he is happy that they tried. However, during the party, Zoey learns from Michael that Chase's grandma had more than the flu; she died on both hers and Chase's birthday. Zoey rushes off, and finds Chase sitting alone in the rain and comforts him. In The Radio, After receiving a Fada Model 115 from his grandfather, Chase sells it to Zoey for $5 and a coupon for a free taco. Back in Room 101, Quinn discovers that the radio is worth $10,000 and Zoey plans to give the radio back to Chase. When Chase discovers the value of the radio, he yells at Zoey for not giving it back to him, even though she was planning to give it back. This makes her mad and she decides not to give the radio back. Their argument quickly expands to include the rest of the gang, who argue. Quinn and Logan think that Zoey should keep the radio, while Lola and Michael think that Zoey should return the radio to Chase. At wit's end, Lola and Quinn call in Mark to act as a mediator who rules that the radio is Zoey's property. Afterwards, Chase and Zoey calmly speak about it and Zoey explains to Chase that she was indeed going to give the radio back to him and that she only didn't after how hurt and angry his hostile words had made her. Chase is ashamed for yelling at Zoey and apologizes. The two then decide to split the profits between them. Unfortunately for them, Chase's grandfather arrives and takes the radio back, having found the value and intending to sell it for himself. In Dance Contest, Zoey is trying to find a dance partner for an upcoming dance contest. Chase volunteers, but Zoey declines due to his lack of dancing skills. When Zoey finds another dance partner who ends up getting hurt and unable to compete, Michael and Logan must help Chase become a wonderful dancer before a dance contest to dance with Zoey. Chase practices all throughout the night and ends up sleeping through the contest. After the Dance Contest ends, Zoey finds out from Michael and Logan that he practiced just for her. Zoey finds Chase and wakes him up and is forced to expain to him the contest already ended. Chase feels terrible about sleeping through the contest but Zoey is moved by Chase's dedication to her and tells him what he did was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for her. The two then share a dance alone in the end and have a great time.

In the season finale, Goodbye Zoey, Zoey's parents come for an unexpected visit to PCA, tell Zoey and Dustin that they are moving to England. When offered to accompany the parents to London and attend Covington Preparatory School, an expensive boarding school located in the city, Zoey thinks about it. Although Zoey treasures Chase's opinion, Chase had heard the rumor before Zoey gets a chance to tell him about the news. This leads Chase to bitterly convince Zoey that she should go to London, and she decides to leave PCA. Before she leaves she gives a sad moment saying goodbye to Lola, Quinn, Michael, Logan, Mark, Dustin, and Stacey. Chase, however, doesn't come to say goodbye. After she leaves, Michael confronts Chase and explains that if he told Zoey to stay at PCA, she would have. Now deeply regretful for treating Zoey so badly and pushing her away, Chase tries to stop her from leaving, but with no success. Chase and Zoey finally talk via webcam after she left for England. Chase apologizes to her, and says that he really misses her. Zoey tells him that she accepts the apology, but she can't return to PCA. Chase starts hanging out with a girl named Gretchen, who looks a lot like Zoey only she has a repulsive personality. Michael and Logan help him admit that he only did so because he missed Zoey, and due to Michael accidentally turning the webcam software back on, Zoey watches Chase confess his love for her when talking to Michael and Logan.

In Season 4, it is revealed in Trading Places that Zoey couldn't shake the feeling that she might love Chase back. She left England to find out and tell him she now knows he loves her. Unfortunately, Chase had the same idea and traveled to England. Upon realizing the mishap, Chase reveals he can't come back to be with Zoey because he promised his parents he would stay in England for at least one semester. They dated for a little while over Webchat, but discovered it was too difficult. They agreed to wait until he returned to PCA, although they could see other people in the meantime. While Chase was away, Zoey did wind up dating another boy named James. In time however, Zoey began to question her feelings for James. In the series finale, Chasing Zoey she ended up breaking up with him just before their upcoming prom. A depressed Zoey then decides to blow off prom not wanting to go by herself and unsure of what's bothering her. Zoey then gets a call from Chase who has seemingly called just to catch up, but he soon reveals to her he has returned from England. Zoey is overjoyed that they are finally together again. After Chase falls down some stairs, he and Zoey wind up kissing for the first time. Zoey realizes the reason she couldn't love James is because she was already in love with Chase. Now officially a couple, Zoey and Chase go to prom together, where Zoey invites Chase to spend the summer with her in Hawaii, which he happily accepts, ending the show with Zoey and Chase finally becoming boyfriend and girlfriend.
